Next week will be the last regular tournament of the 2019 season.  So this is your last chance to join the fun and check out competitive night fishing at Lake Purdy.

Week 20
Six Time Champion Wins

Six time Classic Champion, Jeff England, paired with Tony Marlowe to win in Week 20.  Their total weight of 11.39 lbs was good enough for their third win of the 2019 season.  Their win also ended a frustrating streak of three straight second place finishes during which the former champions wondered if they might ever win again.
As it is, the competition is heating up at the end of the 2019 and many teams have a good shot at winning the big cash prize for the invitational Classic championship on September 5th.  Hopefuls include John Brasher and Justin Hefner who finished 2nd and had the big fish of 3.635lbs.  They didn't even fish in the first half of the season and they need to fish the last two weeks to even qualify for the Classic.  But once they knocked off the rust, they have shown they are capable of winning more than their fair share of the prize money.
The "Wolfe Pack" led by Mike Wolfe with a rotating cast of family members as partners has caught the biggest bass of the season, 8.18lbs, and they remain a serious threat to take home money from the Classic where the Big Fish Prize alone will be $240.  Mike and Tyler Wolfe finished third on August 16th 10.405lbs.
We are down to the last two contest of the 2019 season but new comers are always welcomed and anybody can win.  The Points Standing below indicates with an * the teams already qualified for the Classic on September 5th. The teams that are close to getting into the Classic have a number in parenthesis to indicate the number of contest needed to qualify.

Week 19
Team Money Win

Last year the Team of Zac Hall and Johnny Hill earned the nickname of "Team Money" because they fished infrequently but, when they did, they took home the money.  Despite starting strong by finishing in the money in 4 of the first 5 weeks, Team Money finally got their first win of the season on August 9th.  Their winning weight of 10.816 edged out former champions, Jeff England and Tony Marlowe, who had 9.537 lbs to get their third runner up finish in a row.  England and Marlowe also edged out Dennis and Mike Falkner by less than an ounce for the Big Fish of the night, just shy of three pounds.  Recording artist Jerrod Atkins and his partner, Justin Russell, captured third with 8.805 lbs.
We are down to the last three contest of the 2019 season.  New comers are welcome every week.  The Points Standing below indicates with an * the teams already qualified for the Classic on September 6th. Some teams are close to getting into the Classic.  The numbers in parenthesis indicates the number of contest needed to qualify for that team.

Week 17 and 18

The team of Justin Hefner and John Brasher have been away from the Friday Night Contests for three years.  It took a few weeks to knock off the rust but they finally returned to theri winning form with victories in both week 17 and week 18.  Their winnings of $320 in the last two weeks includes the big fish in week 17 pictured with John Brasher below.  Their winning weight of 13.87lbs was a a good 2.50lbs better than second place which went to former champions Jeff England and Tony Marlowe.  In fact the order of finish in both week 17 and 18 was the same; First, Hefner and Brasher; Second, England and Marlowe; Third, to the leading team in 2019, Paul Renda and Alex Smeraglia.
We are down to the last four contest of the 2019 season.  New comers are welcome every week.  The Points Standing below indicates with an * the teams already qualified for the Classic on September 6th.     The Italian Stallions, Alex Smeraglia and Paul Renda, had to settle for second place with 13.6 lbs but they extended their streak of 13 weeks in the money and still counting.
Third place with 12.05 lbs went to newcomers Luke Fochtman and Arron Cheatham in their first Friday Night Contest.  They also caught the Big Fish of the night, the 7.03 lb large mouth pictured below with Luke Fochtman.

Week 14
Big Money Team reports to the IRS

The Italian Stallions, Alex Smeraglia (left) and Paul Renda (right) won again on July 5th bringing their season winnings to $1431.  They are hoping the IRS doesn't read the Lake Purdy fishing report.  They are on a record streak of 11 straight weeks finishing in the money.  Their winning weight of 17.41 pounds included the big fish of the evening, 5.275 pictured below with Alex.
Justin Hefner and John Brasher are a veteran team that has been absent from the Lake Purdy Friday Night Contest for several years.  They returned for the first time last week and did not weigh in a fish.  But on July 5th, their second week back, they finished second with 9.41.
In third place was Zac Hall and Johnny Hill, the team formally known as"Team Money" with 8.54 lbs.  Their winnings so far this season total only $363, well below their expectation.  But with eight contest to go, their fortunes are expected to improve.

7.5 lb large mouth wins Big Fish
The Italian Stallions, Alex Smeraglia (left) and Paul Renda (right) won on June 28th with a total weight of 12.795 lbs. Paul is holding a 7.5 lb large mouth which was enough to put them in first place.  This win brought the Stallions winning for the season to $1,227.
For Jerrod Atkins and Justin Russell persistence paid off as they finished a solid second with 9.55 lbs.  They just missed a three pounder in the last hour which could have put them into the winners circle.  But that's fishing.  Third went to the remarkably consistent husband and wife team of James and Trishia Layfield with 8.65 lbs.

Week 12
Falkner Brothers step into Winners Circle
The Falkner Brothers, Mike and Dennis (pictured above), Got their first win in 2019 and it was a good one worth $238.  Their total weight was 15.89 lbs and the Big Fish (pictured above on left) was 6.28 lbs.  With this win, the Falkners moved into the top five in the season points standing.  It was good karma for the Falkners who always bring food for the Lake Purdy Crew before the Friday Night tournaments.  And they always have a little extra for our dog, Lake (the dog never forgets).
Second place went Alex Smeraglia and Paul Renda with a very respectable 13.905 lbs, good enough to win on many a Friday Night.  Third went to the up and coming team of James and Trishia Layfield with 9.38 lbs.  They have now placed in the top three in 3 of their first 8 tournaments. A pretty good hit rate for the rookie husband and wife team.

Week 10
Biggest Bass of the Season
Caught June 7th
Mike Wolfe, leader of the Wolfe Pack, caught the biggest bass of the season for the Friday Night tournaments.  It weighed in at 8.18 lbs. But it wasn't enough to win.  Mike and Tyler Wolfe's five fish limit weighed 11.72 lbs, good enough for second.  First place for the third week in a row went to the Italian Stallions, Paul Renda and Alex Smeraglia, pictured below.
It was a Stormy night June 7th which caused some of the usual competitors to sit it out.  We still had 10 teams competing, with third going to last year's Classic Champions, Mike and Mason Wright, with 8.685 lbs.  Mason Wright has been away tearing up the high school competitive bass circuit, so it was good to get this father and son team back for the Lake Purdy Friday Night Contests.

Even Better Fishing on
First Weekend of June
The Italian Stallions, Paul Renda and Alex Smeraglia, are on a roll.  Last week they won with at that time the best weight of the year, 17.83 lbs.  In Week nine the got their second consecutive win and third win of the season with a new best of 18.565 lbs.  But just like last week they didn't catch the big fish of the night.  That went to Hayden Teems with a respectable 5.535lb bass.
The field was tight for for the next few places.  Five teams weighed in with ten pounds or better, topped by James and Tricia Layfield with 10.94 lbs.  Right behind in third was Dennis and Mike Falkner with 10.88 lbs.  Every team weighing in five fish had 9 pounds or better.  Very strong fishing for the first week of June.

Best Fishing of the Season
on Memorial Day Weekend

Week 15
Hot Weather brings Big Bass Bite
The Friday night contest continues to heat up with big bass and heavy weights.  In Week 15 Charlie Burns got the big fish of 6.35 lbs and a total weight of 14.28lbs.  This is after a pound penalty for two dead fish including his big bass. The penalty dropped him to second place behind the team of Chris Leathers and Mike Forrester with the winning weight of 14.42lbs.  There was some confusion at the weigh-in and the first place money was awarded to Charlie Burns but the Chris Leathers was okay with keeping the money awards as distributed since it was his mistake.  Third place went to the Young Guns team with Alex Smeraglia pictured below with a 5.69lb large mouth and a total weight of 11.56lbs

Week 14
Biggest sack of Year for Young Guns
It was a rainy night especially right before the tournament blasted off at 6PM.  But I thought the hardy teams that stuck it out would find the fishing good.  Hayden Teems fishing with a substitute, Austin Goff, won with the greatest total weight of the year, 16.65 lbs!  And they didn't even have the big fish of the night.  That went to Charlie Burns and Donald Jewell with a 4.885 large mouth.  Second place went to Zac Hall and Johnny Hill with 11.39 lbs.  Third place went to former champions, Jeff England and Tony Marlowe with 8.475 lbs.  The first place finish of Hayden Teems was enough to move his "Young Gun" team into a tie for second place in the season points race with 126 points.  The update points standings follow.

Week 13
The Wolfes move up the money list with win and Big Bass

The father and son team of Mike and Nicholas "The Wolfes" won for the the first time since winning the first two tournaments of the 2018 season.  It was a good night to win with 15 teams in the field so their winnings for the night was $225 bringing them up to second place on the money list behind Team Money  which has $942 for the season after Week 13.  The Wolfe's winning weight was 13.075 lbs with a big fish of 4.87 lbs outdistancing the former champ Jeff England who had 11.345 lbs for second and reigning champions, Mike Forrester and Scotty Lewis in third with 9.57 lbs.  With 15 teams the payout was extended to 4th place which went to the Young
Guns which extended their streak of money winning weeks to 5 weeks in a row.

Week 12
Team "Money" Win Again!

Zac Hall fishing with Johnny Hill got their 4th win of the season and approach $1000 in total winnings for the season which explains their nickname as "Team Money".  Their winning weight was 13.345 lb which was tops for the 18 boats entered on June 22.  Thirteen teams weighed in 4 or 5 fish with hand tied jig maker, Jaw Jacker McMillen, bringing in the big bass of the night, 4.195lb.  Second place with 9.65 lbs went to Last year's Champions, Mike Forrester and Scott Lewis.  The Young Guns, Alex Smeraglia and Hayden Teems moved up to third in the season points race with their third place finish.  Ten more weeks to go.  So join this week for the last half of the 2018 season.
